How a small decision can turn your life around
Updated: Feb 21, 2020
I've heard it said that we are the sum total of our choices. This sentiment can be somewhat frightening when you look back over your choices. However, it can also provide hope. If we don't like where our life is currently positioned, we can make choices to move closer to what we want. My favorite analogy for this concept involves the compass. I know in our modern world of GPS, we rarely have the opportunity to use an old fashioned piece of travel technology, but you will probably be able to follow along anyway.
A compass is very sensitive to movement. Over time, if you are one degree off of the intended target, you will end up somewhere you were not expecting. Again, this can be seen as scary or hopeful. It implies the unknown. However, if you see the path ahead of you and you don't want to go down that road, one small choice could change everything!
Now, you might be stuck; feeling like the road you are on is more like a train track with set rails you cannot escape. I'm here to tell you, YOU CAN. Like the train, it might take an outside force to help, but YOU CAN! Change, true change, takes time, commitment, and a willingness to step out. And it also takes an acceptance that you might fail at times coupled with the courage to get back up and try again.
Easy? No. Worth it? Yes! Think about the aspects of yourself, life, or environment you would like to be different. Maybe you think it is too big to change. Break it down. What is one simple change you can make to get one degree closer to that difference? (Check out my blog "Goal Setting" for a more detailed explanation)
This one change can lead to more changes, but even if it does not, you will be on a different path. Your life will have changed. You will have changed.
